The
Legacy of a Cat
It was the early part of
1990 when I and a friend of mine found this little orange fluff ball
digging around in a garbage can in northern Massachusetts where we were
living. He was dirty as could be but very friendly. We took him home
cleaned him up and fed him. That night, after a full belly, he curled up
on the couch next to me and fell into a deep sleep purring loudly. I
noticed his front paws each had an extra toe on it making his feet look
huge. I ended up naming him Tennessee, it just seemed to fit.
This little ball of fur grew to be an 19 pound cat that lived a full
life passing at the age of 18 years old. It was within that life that he
left a legacy of what it means to be connected to life. You see, he
could never be a totally indoor cat, his place was outside. He knew who
he was and why he was here.
In the morning after he had his breakfast he would head out the door to
greet each of the neighbors when they went off to work. Known to the
entire neighborhood as "The Man About Town", he went up and down the
block everyday with a sense of purpose and direction. Everyday for him
was a new adventure.
At the end of the day when I got home from work if he wasn't around I
would whistle for him and he would come running from one of the
neighbors back yards. He always wanted to tell me about his day and all
that had happened. He was a very expressive being. They say orange
tabbys have a language all their own and I would have to agree.
As he grew older the trips to the neighbors became less and less. People
commented on how their day didn't seem complete without their morning
hello from Tennessee. His days were now spent on the couch sleeping,
enjoying the warmth of the sun.
It has been a year since his transition and the legacy he left me with
is one of experiencing life to the fullest and never looking back. To
get out there and mix and mingle with people and let them know they are
loved, even if it is only for one minute out of the day.
So what legacy have your animals left you? Take some time to reflect on
this question as they all bring something very different to all of us,
and for that I am grateful!
Making the Connection
Over the past few years I have had the
opportunity of working with some amazing people whose dogs suffered from
seizures. I don't think I have ever met a more committed group of people
dedicated to helping their animal companion have the best life possible
considering their situation. Many said they had done an enormous amount
of research on the subject and all seemed to find themselves on this one
particular helpful site
www.canine-epilepsy-guardian-angels.com . If you are in a similar
situation and haven't already, take the time to check out the website
for a lot of great information. There is a connection between the food
and seizures!
Control, either totally or partially, of seizures can often time be
helped with the proper diet. Many seizure animals do very well with a
diet that contains no grains and no gluten. One of the best foods you
can look into purchasing is called The Honest Kitchen. They have several
different varieties of this dehydrated raw diet. People who use the food
swear by it. There are a couple of diets available through them that
specifically do not contain grains or gluten. For more information on
the food for seizure and allergy issues please visit
www.thehonestkitchen.com
for more information on their complete food line.
Treats for pets with seizures or allergies can also become an issue. We
always want to treat our pets to a healthy treat but those with
allergies or prone to seizures often can't find a good wholesome treat
to feed. One website you MUST check out is called Simply pAwesome! Many
of their treats are wheat and gluten free. Whether your pet has health
issues or not these are wonderful treats that my dogs just simply can't
get enough of. Please visit their website for a complete list of yummy
treats for your pet!
